Drowning in the Kindergarten Homework pool.

Several moms wrote in to Stop Common Core in New York State with concerns because their kindergarten children were out sick for just a day or two and, received from 11-20 pages of homework sheets.

The general rule of thumb in elementary school for time spent on AGE APPROPRIATE HOMEWORK is 10 minutes per grade level. For example, 3rd grade = 30 min. Kindergarten according to this rule should have none. Lets allow ten minutes, to give the benefit of the doubt. Not ten pages. And certainly not twenty.

So much to say about early childhood rigor.

Merriam Webster defines rigor as follows:

rig·or noun \ˈri-gər\
rigors : the difficult and unpleasant conditions or experiences that are associated with something

: the quality or state of being very exact, careful, or strict

Full Definition of RIGOR

1
a (1) : harsh inflexibility in opinion, temper, or judgment : severity (2) : the quality of being unyielding or inflexible : strictness (3) : severity of life : austerity
b : an act or instance of strictness, severity, or cruelty
2
: a tremor caused by a chill
3
: a condition that makes life difficult, challenging, or uncomfortable;
4
: strict precision : exactness

Parents, if you don’t fight this now, college and career ready for four and five year olds will stay. Kindergarten had NO homework, much less this outrageous, completely age appropriate amount, until the onset of common core. Now, because teachers cannot juggle the ridiculous demands, they’re sending the work home. This becomes parent homework. These babies cannot read, the parents are doing this homework with and for them. Homework in this excessive amount is unhealthy and abusive. Children this age need family time, play time, and time to unwind. And remember, Arne Duncan wants children in school for at least 8 hours a day at minimum. Even the youngest set. This will only get worse.

What are you doing to fight common core today?
